Mary-
In my experiences with container gardens is----use a "really good" potting
mix--I use Jungle Grow Professional Grow Mix and what a difference it has
made - it contains shredded bark/long fiber canadian peat/vermiculite/perlite
and charcoal all of which seems to help the plants thrive. I can only buy
this product at Low's as they have an exclusive contract (or so I was told).
My mom-n-law told me about it and I've never had better looking ferns in pots
since I started using it. When I first pot my plants up I put about a
tablespoon or so (depending on the pot size) of slow release
fertilizer...seems to me that potted plants enjoy the extra boost.
Something that was suggested to me by Pam (Murfsmomma), which I think is a
wonderful idea is to put a coffee filter on the bottom of your pot--this
allows the water to slowly "perk" out rather than run out of the pot. You
don't loose your soil and the plant has sufficient time to absorb the water
it needs (without leaving the soil too soggy).
I hope some of these suggestions help - I know how frustrating it is....but
the Jungle Grow has really helped me.
Happy gardening
