Yep, Mary, a totally scientific approach:-)

If you do fresh batches each year, you shouldn't have any problems with
compaction.  Plus, the spent soil makes great fill for raised beds...did
some with it and the plants in them are the happiest I've got.  Stockpiled
it for several years to get enough to fill the beds - grew great weeds in
the interim:-)
