Nan, It's a Genus of only 3 species closely related ti Digitalis found in
open places and forests up to 4900' in Madeira and the Canary Islands; but
all that I can come up with is Isoplexis canariensis, which seems to fit
your description somewhat: "Erect bushy when young, spreading with
age.Lance shaped to narrowly ovate, sharply toothed, almost leathery, deep
green lvs to 6" long, softly hairy beneath, are borne close together.
Produces dense racemes, 12" long, of tubular, bright org, brownish org, or
yellow brown flowers to 1 1/4 "long, each with a two lobed upper lip, mainly
in summer. Grows to 5' x 3' Hardy to 41F. Takes
full sun/ pt shd water moderately/ fert. monthly during growing period
fertile, moist well drained soil. Shelter from cold drying winds and water
sparingly in the winter."
It's a beauty in the photo, sorry I'm not equipped to
include it. Can't find a word about 'calcanthus'
