I used to have a very full double darkest purple, almost black poppy.
Between 5 & 6 ft tall. For some reason I didn't get any when I seeded that
same perennial border again last year. I have lavender, frilly double pink
and single red - all tall, but no black :(. I have more seeds to sprinkle
this winter, so I'm hoping I'll get another black one next summer. These
are Papaver somniferum. Speaking of Papaver - those of us who have P.
orientalis in the garden can sneak some root cuttings off of them now
through March or April. If your ground isn't frozen of course.

There is a wealth of hands-on information on meconopsis in the Alpine
Archives which are open to the public.

Also try some of the currently available opium poppy purple/violet shades.
These are very attractive also.
