Re: aphids and mandevilla

Sounds like others are having indoor insect problems too.
Visited my parents to day and noticed that the Impatiens they had brought in
for the winter were looking very poor-white flies had sucked the life out of
them.

Two weeks ago when I was over there, the Impatiens were just starting to open
up a lush flush of bright white flowers. Would have been nice for Christmas.

They wanted to know how to control them-and I said that they should put the
plant in large bag and spray some insecidal soap and seal up the bag for a
few hours.
Hopefully they can get rid of the white flies because I started some Fuchsia
and I do not have the room to keep them.

I had some seed that was 21 months old and that put it out side of the age I
wished to sell it-so I sowed 80 seeds and now have 60 small plants-and its
not even winter yet.
So my parents will get the Fuchsia babies and hopefully they can keep the
white flies off them.

Its going to be cold over the next few days here. With the highs around 0 to
5 F.
and I am impatiently waiting for spring to come. As I said above I have
started some seeds-even though it's way to early for good successes.

A lot of seed as gone into plastic bags and the fridge for "pretreatment"
Looks like its going to be a big year for Columbines.

As a side note I started some ASCLEPIAS x 'Gay Butterflies' - Ten years ago I
bought this same seed from TM and out of 30 seeds ended up with one plant and
that did not germinate until two months after sown.

For ASCLEPIAS i promote a diffrent germination regime and wanted to test out
the seed I have of the 'Gay butterflies' So I soaked 55 seeds and sowed them,
expecting to wait a month or two for any number to germinate. Well, in five
days I had 52 seedlings. So now I have something to do all winter-nurse my
new plants and hopefully see what colors I get this July. A nice dark red is
what I am hoping for.
