In the UK it is in theory an offence to grow this poppy. The offence is not
in growing the plant but being in possession of the plant. It is an offence
to be in possession of a number of constituent parts of the plant including
"poppy straw" Poppy straw is basically what you are left with at the end of
the growing season and consign to the compost heap. In 1995 I was a serving
police officer approaching retirement with the intention to set up a seed
company when I retired and tried to get a definitive answer to the poppy
straw question while I was "still on the inside" I failed miserably and 5 or
6 years down the line I am none the wiser. I'd like to think however that
the enforcement side would continue to have more sense than the legislative
side. Can you imagine how many little old women(and men) they could lock up
in a year for possessing "poppy straw"
I don't recommend trying to grow a few acres of the stuff!!!!!!!!
