Someone mentioned that Thompson and Morgan are not selling the opium poppies
this year. The 2001 catalog lists some but the seed is described as papaver
paeoniflorum. Paeoniflorum is a synonym for somniferum, that is same thing.
I can find no verification papaver paeoniflorum, just a mention in AZ that it
is a cultivar of somniferum. The current T & M catalog also states that the
seed of papaver rhoeas is edible.
One cannot blame T & M for trying to avoid trouble with the sale of seeds,
considered a gentle business as a rule.
The T & M catalog is a good addition to the plants and seeds available in
that the catalog contains information and pix just coming to market from
American companies. In our area T & M have seed racks in some garden
centers. Garden centers around here tend to have 1/2 price sales in January
on all seeds. The selection is not vast but the prices are good giving us
some of the T & M rarer seeds at a smaller price - also no shipping.
The larger the companies become, the more difficulty there is with
excellence. I do agree that Chiltern is a great source. Last year's catalog
was online. I haven't looked this year.
