2 forks work on some things, but not others. And in my experience a long handled shovel won't work either. I have a trenching shovel. I think that is what it is called. Mine is military issue picked up at a yard sale. I have seen them in camping stores or military surplus stores. It is a small shovel with a short (18" or so) handle. The blade part is small, flatter and has more of a V shape to it than the typical garden shovel. I can step on that while I push down and get through most things. Or just hack at the clump with it. The size of this helps me to use my weight rather than upper body strength.

 Anyway, back to the question... I always read about using the
double fork method to divide perennials - is this easier than chopping with
a shovel? And what do you do when the shovel just seems to bounce off the
root ball rather than cutting it?
