Yes, a good knife in indispensable, I like mine with a thick heavy blade and
a sharp point.
And during the potting season I use my knife every day to divide up plants,
cut off excess roots, and trim off tops of plants. I try my best to make
most of my divisions by hand-pulling them apart-but this is many times not
possible and the knife is needed.
If I have my knife, gloves and tiling spade, I can get a lot done.
