Are the surfaces of the pods smooth? Then most likely you have the
native Aesculus californica. I have successfully germinated these
seeds by placing them in a zip-lock type of plastic bag with just
barely moist peat moss and placing them in the vegetable bin of my
refrigerator (i.e about 40F). They should begin to germinate by late
winter and can be planted in pots, or outside whenever the danger of
frost is past.
