Old Gardens

I rescued more than 2000 scilla bulbs from an abandoned house two or three
years ago. It was clear it had once been a beautiful garden, and just as
clear that the old folks had been ill for some time before the property was
put up for sale. One day, the whole street will be commercial--no-one's
buying the house at the price they're asking. I called the listing agent,
asked if I could dig, and the agent said "fine."

I went back for two more springs--scilla, daffs, some daylilies, a white
quince, some iris--pretty much everything that would dig with a shovel.
There are some blueberries on the property I'd love to have, and roof-high
camellias, but they're not coming out without a tree spade.

In my high school years, we lived next to the guy who always won the
"perfect lawn" awards for our neighborhood. When they moved out, a family
with 7.5 children moved in. End of perfect lawn award.
