Greetings on this last day of the new year,
In a message dated 12/31/02 12:07:19 PM Eastern Standard Time, llmen@wi.rr.com writes:What other experiences have others on the list had with that special and very expensive plant that "you just had to have"?Oh Don, you should get a lengthy list of true confessions here if the spouse or partner does not read your email.
thank goodness for separate email accounts!
I've watched people send thousands of dollars at daylily auctions. Couldn't do it. I have watched in disbelief as a new intro sells for $350 and a seedling, with naming rights, go for $1250.
I am going to give this some more thought. There have been many. You only
live once.
When a somewhat younger, I sat next to a new friend at a society meeting who
asked me what I had found new interesting that spring. What did I order? We discussed it for a while and he told me, knowing I could not squeal on
him, that around 2,000.00 had left his checkbook. He had begun to visit the
Post Office to use money orders so he could not be found out. It was a great
shock to me at that time, I thought him completely out of control.
BUT, I have watched my hand remain in the air as the bidding soared to $60 for a few "just got to have" daylilies. (my private auction record is $135 for 5 plants. My most expensive single purchase is around $50.)
AND, I have built entire orders around one or two plants or to fill a tray. (After all, I spent $60 to fill a tray to get my hands on a few huechera.)
Nah, after 10 years of going to daylily auctions, I still think a few of these folks are totally out of control.Later, I changed my mind.
