I paid $90 for a daffodil bulb a few years ago. The year before it had sold
for $500 in an auction at the Daffodil Society convention. It has flourished
for me, though a few others who bought one of the 6 existing bulbs have lost
it.
Since I have yet to succeed in keeping a $20 ladyslipper alive for more than
a year, I surely wouldn't go for one at $600. A local (Cincinnati-area)
nursery is propagating several kinds of ladyslipper orchids and should have
them for sale in a year or two--but I know they won't be going for $600! I
bought a spiranthes (I think a common name is Ladies Tresses Orchid) at a
local perennial nursery two years ago and it has lived and bloomed for
me--it's a lovely little plant if you have the right climate and setting for
it. It's native to Ohio and probably adjoining areas.
