This is the plant I was thinking of also. Although I must say that the
photos online are lousy- I looked at a bunch of sites and none of them
really look very good. So, if your plant doesn't look exactly like the
photo, don't fret.

Purple velvet plant usually refers to the Gynura aurantiaca:

But this photo doesn't really match your description, so I'm stumped.
