NATIONALLY ACCLAIMED GARDEN GETS A NEEDED BOOST
New Fund to Acquire and Preserve Former Heronswood
Nursery Property 
Created
at Kitsap Community Foundation.
 
(Silverdale, WA)   Preservation of the former
Heronswood Nursery 
property in
Kingston received a boost today when The Kitsap
Community Foundation 
(KCF)
announced that the 3Friends of Pacific Northwest
Horticultural 
Conservancy
Fund2 has been established to support acquisition and
preservation of 
the
internationally renowned botanical garden and plant
collection.  The 
goal is
to establish a community-based, self-sustaining
horticultural research 
and
education center, collaborating with educational
institutions such as 
the
University of Washington and Olympic College.

The newly formed group, Pacific Northwest
Horticultural Conservancy 
(PNHC)
consists of volunteers and advisors from garden
enthusiasts, educators 
and
plant experts locally and nationally, who have
combined to raise funds 
to
purchase the former Heronswood Nursery property.  The
endowment at KCF 
will
provide support to PNHC on a long term basis for
maintenance and 
operations.

3Not only does this fund give the community an
opportunity to preserve 
a
much loved community asset2, notes Jennifer Green,
Executive Director 
at
KCF, 3but an anonymous donor has stepped forward to
offer up to $25,000 
in
matching gifts to the fund at KCF!2.  Gifts, however,
must be 
postmarked to
KCF by December 31, 2006 in order for the match to
apply.  Checks are 
to be
sent to: KCF, PO Box 3670, Silverdale, WA 98383.

Green adds, 3The Pacific Northwest has received
increased focus on 
gardens
of particular note. That we have one such as the
Heronswood property in

least about economic impact of the growing tourist
dollars in this
