Aroids are members of the family Araceae. They are characterized by a
large spathe that partially surrounds a spadix (the actual part where
the flowers are, like a spike).
Some of the more common perennial versions include Arum italicum (Arum
of Italy), Peltandra virginica (Arrow arum (for those of you with water
gardens)), Arisaema triphyllum (Jack-in-the-pulpit), and Arisaema
draconitum (Green dragon).
Common houseplants include Philodendron and Anthuriums. There's lots
more, and I don't pretend to know but 1% of them!
