Well, interesting as my post never showed up in my inbox as hitting this
list and I was just about to repost it!

Marilyn,  No, he says he has seen the beast and an iris growing buddy of
his said it was Iris Borer.  Everything I could find indicated Iris Borer
only ate Iris, but replies from posting this SOS on Shadegardens indicate
that there is evidence that it has eaten Columbine which is also a member
of the Ranunculaceae family...so it may be that they will eat other plants.
  Now, termites is a thought :-)

Diane, have you known of root weevils attacking Peony?  Margaret on
Shadegardens suggested Black Vine Weevil as she says they do attack the
foliage.  Is this the weevil you're referring to?
