Hi Ginny, I grow many H. orientalis, all colors, H. foetidus, H. corsica
(this one has a different name now, but I can't remember it) and H. niger.
Some are old (20+ years) and some are 1-3 years old, but none have been
fertilized except for the initial compost and handful of granulated balanced
fertilizer that was put in the planting hole. All have bloomed beautifully
and the clumps get bigger every year. I have never heard that they are
voracious feeders. Actually they seem to do quite well with whatever
nutrients they can extract from our acid/clay soil. All are planted beneath
deciduous trees and put on a good show from about now until early June. I
wonder if perhaps their nutrient needs are different in different zones
and/or soils? Marilyn
