Re: Ipomea batatus Blackie

Myrna,

I had this for the first time this year. Dug a plant and potted it up and
it seems to be holding well inside. It is also extremely easy from
cuttings; will root in water. Should overwinter fine for you. Lovely
plant. Also comes in a striking chartreuse ('Margarita') and a variegated
leaf form ('Pink Frost'). It's a sweet potato and forms a tuber that is
supposed to be edible. I know the plant I dug had a nice fat tuber that
did look like a small sweet potato. Supposedly, you can just store the
tubers to replant the next year, but I don't have a clue on proper storage
methods for them.

These are extremely frost tender and will not winter over in the ground
where temps get below 32F, but can be wintered easily in the house with
good light.
