Ah, what do I do to make my lavender bloom? First of all, I LOVE lavender,
so I have many species planted in probably every bed on our property - alot
of beds. I guess it works out that some of them are going to be very
happy, and others not. We compost alot, and I am constantly harvesting my
lavender in August until now. I've been drying the flower buds for
potpourris, and dried many many stems to do dried flower arrangements. I
think all that cutting is part of the trick. One of these days I'll learn
how to extract oil and make soap and bath oils etc., cause I sure spend a
fair $$ buying lavender bath oil and soap! Maybe Santa will bring me a
book on how to do that. I am not to fussy about where I plant - just
filling in spaces in beds. They sure start to settle down their second
year.
One of the largest lavender farms on Vancouver Island started in a unique
way. The owner's mother/father gave her this huge lavender root ball,
which she claims to have cut into about 500 little plants and put in a
coldframe. They thrived beautifully, and she planted out in rows. Voila!
Today, a large lavender farm.
