Val,
I know this is a bit late, but so goes it.
I plant tons of things, mostly perennials, in the fall
and have lost very little. Most years, I try not to plant unless I know
that the ground won't freeze solid for about 6 weeks. This gives them
plenty of time to establish themselves before really cold weather sets in.
You have to remember to water them, though, until they are established.
This year was so unusually warm that I planted up until
about three weeks ago. I plan to go out a plant what is left lying around
in pots (mostly daylilies and hostas). Figure that they will survive in
pots all winter, so I might as well try and give them a little more space.
It will be interesting to see how well they fare.
