There is a big difference in blackberry bushes offered today then what 
our grandmothers used. Also there are cultivated blackberries and those 
wild things growing everywhere. It is kind of like comparing a 
multifloria wild rose to a modern shrub rose. Todays plants are much 
better behaves.

Chester is an excellent blackberry with minimal suckering and thornless. 
In our opinion though you do give up some of that good blackberry flavor. 
Personally we would go with a variety called Illinois. While it does have 
thorns the flavor seems more true to us.
