Hi Forrest, Castor beans are very easy to start. I put mine in 4" pots - 2
to a pot in the greenhouse about the first of April. They are big enough to
go out side and hold their own even with the bluejays by May 1st. I
transplant them to gallon pots at that time ( they could go into the ground
as well )and thin to the one strongest bean stalk. It always reminds me of
Jack and the Beanstalk. Mine only made it to 7 ft. but that's not too bad
for a climate where we always have cool nights.

Backyard gardener site didn't respond, but the other two sites did. Neither
gives information on Ricinus communis (castor bean). They keep growing full
blast until a frost hits, and I like to see them get very tall. I want to
know the germination time of seed so I can have some well-started plants by
the time frost is past in the spring in central Oklahoma.
