There's a lot of lake and marsh country here in southeast Michigan, egrets
and herons all over the place -- to the (delight?) of the koi fanciers.
When I was a kid all the horse farms around our house had peacocks, both
to be pretty and to keep down the local rodent population. They're nicer
in photos and film: big, mean, loud (neighbors will think you've set
yourself on fire), did I mention big and mean? Then there's that messy
thing inherent with all fowl. You look out the window and your sunny
border bed has become a scratching area...
