I agree with you.   I found Mr. Owens to be stiff and unmoving in his
article, and that might be fine for him and some other people,  however
I consider myself a hands on gardener.  there is nothing wrong with
taking advice and suggestions for others,   but I like to do my own
thing.   if a plant don't work in one place,  then I just move it to
another until I get it right.
His method would take the joy out of gardening for me,  that's not to
say, it works for everyone.
wouldn't it be problem a  if everyone did things the same way,  or
bought the same plant, or designed their garden the same way
my motto is     "hang loose"     and ENJOY and have FUN
