The compost and manure should do the trick. Now that you mention you have
heavy clay soil, I agree that too much moisture is likely also to be a
problem. Either situation, moisture or fertility, will be improved by the
addition of organic matter. Yes, the Oriental Lilies are not as carefree as
the Asiatics, but they are not really difficult, either. I think once you
have amended your soil you will find the Orientals agreeable.
Not that you need a book to grow lilies, but you might enjoy 'Lilies: a Guide
for Growers and Collectors' by foremost lily authority and hybridizer, Edward
McRae. I had the opportunity to hear him lecture at the Missouri Botanical
Garden last year when the local Lily Society brought him here. What a treat!
