Haven't heard anything about his show, but he is doing a big merchandising
thing (for a fee, of coure) for garden centers who can offer 'P Allen Smith'
branded plants and get various promotional materials and such. They seem to
think the PBS show will generate all kinds of demand and name recognition...
P.Allen Smith has an arrangement with several growers to produce and
distribute these plants. And at least in the near term, these varieties will
not be exclusive... But maybe he'll do like Monrovia and add a special name
to a plant ???, like Monrovia's Angel Blush hydrangea (aka hydrangea
paniculata Ruby). Personally, I have a hard time thinking that people will
buy a plant because his name is on it - seems that if they heard about a
plant on TV they might go looking for that plant (like echinacea/purple
coneflower or Magnus purple coneflower or whatever)... but then, I guess I
might not be typical.
