I cannot compare the two but I can remark on Bill's devotion to 'Polish
Spirit.' I have the other one. Since Bill has mentioned this a few times
(maybe more than a few times) , I am going to acquire one this spring. It
just has to be a good middle American plant. 'Etoile Violette' is very
vigorous, somewhat drought resistant and produces millions of blossoms. It
will also grow along the ground on top of a ground cover. I do not prune
mine as any woody plant part is pruned here when we discover how much of that
plant actually survives.

As the clematis swell buds very early, here even when frosts are still
expected, I don't prune them. Leaves appear and other things make life in
the garden busy so the clematis pruning never happens. One of my EV's grows
into and all over a large Kalmia allowing the Kalmia to bloom twice. If some
non-blooming wood remains at the base of the vine it twists itself around the
shrub so bare spots don't appear in what is a leafy shrub. Same for the one
that travels along the Alchemilla patch. Granted, it may not be the best
combination but it volunteered.
