Re: Soaker hose/Irrigation by leaky pipe

Here's a new question: How do you tell if you have watered enough,
especially if you use an irrigation system that is buried under inches of
mulch? Do you use some kind of tool to test the wetness of the soil? Or
just assume based on prior experience that a certain number of minutes of
watering will do the trick? With sprinklers (which I am embarrassed to say
I still rely on), it is pretty easy to tell. But when I switch to an
irrigation system, how will I know? I don't want to kill off my plants as
the price of discovering what isn't enough!

Thanks.

I too, use soaker hoses. In the vege garden they lay on top of the
raised beds. In our case this works well for us. We have it set up
that for each row you can turn on or off the water and still be able to
water other rows. The garden is built up in the middle, so the corners
are lower. The water does on occation pool on the lower ends, but this
to does have an added bonus. I find that in the heat of summer, I get
hundreds of butterflies puddling where the water pools!

In my flowerbeds I bury the soaker hose under the mulch. There is about
400' of hose down in the main bed and I haven't had any trouble from
our well water. I do flush it out now and then, so that may help. I
find that this an easy way to water deeply during our droughts.
