Hi Patty, I am a Japanese Anemone fan too. I grow the very tall, vigorous
and lovely 'Mme. Honorine Jobert', pure white single - 6' in my garden in
part shade. Blooms September-November here. Also 'Alice' a semi double
cotton candy pink to 5 ft. with similar bloom habit but not quite as
vigorous. Also 'Prince Henry' - 4' double rose pink, blooms more shyly, but
is lovely. New last year for me 'Whirlwind' at 5' a double white blooming
August-October in western exposure. All the rest have early afternoon
southern exposure. Mine grow in rich soil, raised beds with good drainage.
The first 3 have been in place about 8-9 years and I divide them every
February (steal starts from the clumps). I hope they are hardy for you, but
I don't have any experience with zone 4.

Subject: Japanese Anemones
Does anyone grow Japanese Anemones? I have ordered some Anemone tomentosa,
Robustissima. I plan to use them as a backdrop to a bed that has mostly
Asiatic, Oriental, Trumpet, and Species lilies, to provide some interest
after the Orientals stop blooming. The bed follows a gentle slope to the
south, and the back of the bed is due West with a row of Arborvitae to
provide some protection from Westerly winds. Even though the hardiness
rating for these anemones is Zone 5 and I am in Zone 4, they are said to be
the hardiest type, and I hope to keep them happy over the winters with a
little extra TLC (like good drainage and mulch). Does anyone have
suggestions for growing them in borderline zones or just culture tips in
general? Also, does anyone have any favorite varieties, especially if they
might be successfully grown in zone 4? I just love the way these plants look
(in pictures-I've never seen a real one!)...especially the tall ones.
