Once a frost becomes immenent, I dig them up, place them in pots, cut them
way back and bring them into the greenhouse. At least, that's what I do
with the mandevillas. I have them hanging from an arbor entrance in the
summers, and they are very expensive to replace each year. This way, I only
have to buy one or two every spring.
I have an Astromeria (sp?) that I cut back only slightly, because it will
provide blooms all winter as long as I continue to cut the flowers. If I
let them stay on the plant, it will get lazy and tired.
I never cut my hibiscus and it blooms quite frequently.
Most geraniums I cut back so they will spend most of the winter filling
out, but I leave a few whole for color.
This winter I even brought in some snapdragons and have been making small
flower arrangements with them. They are leggy, but still pretty.
Other things are just trial and error. Parsley does well, as does sage,
mint and especially Rosemary. The Rosemary I do not cut back, I just move
it back in forth.
Hope this helps!
