I like to use bed sheets for such an occasion (which seems to occur in 
the upper south at least once each winter!)  How well it works depends 
upon how cold it gets.  We had a late freeze last spring, down into the 
teens, and I still lost magnolia and bletilla blossoms.  And, wouldn't 
you know, the dumb things are going to do the same thing againthis year!  
I covered the bletilla that's sprouting with several inches of pine 
straw Sunday, hoping to convince them to go back to sleep...
