Doreen,
I know I'm late on this one, but here goes. I use Peter's
Vermicultite, it is very fine textured and very light. I get at a local
farm store ( that's it's name) in the spring. Pre-moisten it before
planting your seeds or you'll end up with your peat pots turning over
the first time you water. Make sure to keep your flats moist, because
it will dry out fairly fast. I use a very weak fertilizer solution
about once a week after the seedlings get their true leaves.
For those nasty little gnats, I bought a venis flytrap and put that
close to my seed starting area. This also works well on those summer
gnats I seem to get when I start picking the veges. Hope this helps.
