Nan,
try any paint on your pots. The main thing is that you'll want to seal it
with a clear overcoat to protect your hard work from the elements. If you
want brighter colors on terra cotta, try a white primer first, then your
paint. You could go to a paint store, but it makes more economical sense
to go to a local K-Mart or Target to get a cheap pint of paint. Spend
better money on the clear overcoat as it will take most of the abuse.
Believe it or not, some of the best soft finishes I've seen were done with
milk that had a little paint mixed it. It looked stained instead of
painted. These pots were coated with a clear finish to prevent molds from
forming.
Funny you should mention it, because some of my pots were decorated by my
eight-year-old daughter. She does a couple for me every year and they
still look good because of the clear finish. The prettiest pots she did
were done in black and white stripes and spots. If you plant blazing red
geraniums in these pots, they'll light up a patio!
