Nah, its an old gardening plant rotation technique. I came across it many
times when working on my latest book (plug - "Garden Wisdom - Old Gardening
Techniques" - available in April):-)
You follow a weedy crop with potatoes because (as has been suggested) you
spend a lot of time keeping the potato soil clean if you want a good crop.
This applies to any root crop.
I remember back when I was a kid (not *all* that many years ago):-), a
neighbour planted potatoes in his house the first year he wanted to grow a
lawn there rather than a hay field. After the potatoes came the lawn. He
wasn't a great gardener so neither the potatoes nor the lawn ever amounted
to much.
