Re: Arisaema rust was: Helleborus foetidus / Arisaema

Paul,

As Gene said, Arisaema rust is problem. I've seen it on some wild
populations of A. triphyllum in my woods. Not universal and not
every year in the same place. Seems to be a very opportunistic
fungus. Sometimes a clump will have one plant affected and the
others aren't. I immediately remove affected parts, but don't dig up
the plants as I have read that it doesn't seem to affect the tubers
and there is a good chance of them surviving and returning the next
year to grow normally, albeit smaller. I've seen this happen,
actually in one population that I denuded one year. Came back the
next with no sign of rust.

There is no known cure as far as I know and as Gene said, the
archives of Arisaema-L have a lot of threads on this topic and a lot
of info.

What you don't' want to do is just leave it be as it is deadly.....if
you spot it, immediately remove the affected parts and trash them and
don't handle other Arisaema without washing your hands. Seems to be
specific to this genus and doesn't affect other genera, although
there are rusts that affect other plants, too...just not this one -
at least this is what I gather from the posts I've read.

I have not yet (knock on wood) seen it on other species of Arisaema
in my garden and it hasn't hit the plants in my borders.
