Joan, a large white flowering perennial makes me think of the Eupatoriums
such as 'Chocolate' which would be a great foliage contrast to your rose.
Maybe a shrub such as Eleutherococcus sieboldianus 'Variegatus' with its
creamy-white edged foliage. This has no blooms but who needs bloom when you
have such dramatic foliage. Labeled as 8' but you are in control with
needed pruning. Also there are a number of varities of Sambucus that would
be nice. Again no bloom but wonderful contrasting foliage with the choice of
yellows & purples.
One of my favorite blooming shrubs is variegated Weigela with pink
blooms. I have had mine for a number of years. Someone mentioned the
Lespedeza and it to is a favorite but it would not be showy in fact pretty
drabe except in its late summer bloom and mine does not hold bloom for 2
months.
