Well, I don't know if this is embarrassing or rather odd. I took it into my head that the only way to properly prepare soil was to dig out these major holes three feet or so deep, two feet by three ft wide. It looked like I was digging graves. I would dig every day. Then after I had dug them. I would sift all the dirt and pitch fork them back into the hole layering the soil with peat moss and cow manure. I would use usually a 1/2 of a large 4 cu bale of peatmoss and (2) 40lb bags of cow manure per hole. I would normally buy over 30 bales of peatmoss per summer. I did this until I had done over most of my yard. Which took several years. I only have 10,000 square ft property. Now, of course, I only dig down about a foot and amend the soil. After the initial digging, I didn't have to amend the soil for years. It was an absolute pleasure to work those beds. My neighbors all thought I was crazy. Totally enjoyed the gardening attire stories. I have ruined many "good" clothes and shoes. Things like heals are not meant to be worn gardening, but I just happened to have them on my feet when I thought I would take a "few moments" out in the garden.
