>How do you keep them in the binders? in plastic sleeves so you can see
both sides? punch holes in
them? (wouldn't they tear easily?) put them in folders in the binders?
1. I have an endless source of binders that we through out at the office,
in all sizes from 4" down to the itty-bitty ones. I used the big ones for
the alphabetized species articles; others for the sub-categories.
2. Put the pile of magazines on the floor; flipped pages, tore out articles
as I found ones I wanted to keep, stapled them together, sometimes having to
flip the first page if it had been a left-side page (so the topic showed on
top of the stapled set). Toss any pages that were ads on both sides, but
most of the magazines don't do that because they want you to keep the ad
material. Punch holes with a 3-hole punch.
3. Sorted the articles by general category. (This took up the ENTIRE
living room floor and I had to keep the dogs outside while I was working.)
4. Filed.
After a while, I realized I had to put the staple in the upper right corner;
the staples in the left corner were taking up too much space at the
ring-edge of the pages. I haven't noticed a problem with tearing. The
binders are heavy and need to be treated respectfully, but there's so much
in there now that the articles protect each other. Plastic sleeves would
have been TOO MUCH work, and taken up too much space. Ditto folders.
I use folders in my on-going garden notebook, BTW, to stash anything that
won't take a 3-hole punch.
I did have a little trouble with the articles from Martha Stewart Living
(fished out of the recycle bin at the dump) and Fine Gardening; they're on
bigger paper that hides the binder tabs. Oh well. The system works a whole
lot better than "stacks" ever did.
Currently, I just toss articles I want to save in a box and one day I'll
have another filing party. But I've learned my body's "that's too much,
woman, stop now!" signals a little better and haven't had another disabling
injury in a while. The filing can wait.
