RE: Heronswood Cat arrived

Happy New Year Everyone,
Wow, I only made it through the C's last night and I have already marked
about 25 perennials I'd like to order! Be sure to read the story on page
127 of the catalog concerning his adventures as a plant hunter and his fear
of heights. If I never bought another plant, I would still read this
catalog from cover to cover for the wonderful writing and story telling.
My usual approach with this catalog is to order a few plants I've either
never heard of or no nothing about. I've discovered some wonderful
perennials and shrubs this way. A few dogs too....but that is all part of
the pleasure and adventure of being a gardener.
Here's a tip, if there is something you just can't live without, order
early and ask for an early shipping date. The orders are filled by earliest
shipping date requested and get first choice. After that, you are likely to
get substitutions - pick some good substitutions too. I ask for an early
shipping date (usually Feb) and plan to repot them into gallon size
containers when they arrive and put them into the cold frame or even the
greenhouse for something like Phormiums. Then when the weather has settled,
your plants are bigger, have good roots and are ready to jumpstart when
planted into the garden.

Now with the catalog in hand... I guess I can order
tomorrow online.

Hmmm... what should I order....hmmm. I like looking
what the staff recommends as there favorite plant. I
did see an article somewhere about Geranium phaeum
'Ring of Fire'. I'll pick this up. If you would like
to try something different, look at there website in
2003.
