Flower shows

Here is another snowday question.
How many like competitive flower shows? This would be the arrangement
competition. All of spring shows have this section which use florist
material as it is usually too early for garden flowers. Later on, the fall
shows should give you material from your own garden.
I should say that I have never understood this area of gardening, Ed calls it
the comedy section of the show but it is taken very seriously by some. I am
not alluding to the show bench where the excellence of the individual flower
is judged, rather the themed display.
Katherine White wrote on this subject. Beverley Nichols was so outraged on
what was shown in competitive shows, he wrote a book to show one how it
should be done. There is a series of letters published in a large anthology
by Roy Strong between two British women. On has been taken to such a show
though her experience is on a field, in a tent.

flower show, just die. It's quicker."
