I couldn't grow Hollyhocks either until I discovered that they are winter
annuals here like pansies, poppies, and snapdragons. All of these die in
late spring when it gets hot but look terrific all winter and don't freeze.
Here in the south we have to reverse our seasons. When northerners are
planting in spring, we are yanking out dead plants. Spring planting for us
is February. When northerners are mulching and covering for winter, it's
time to plant our fall gardens. The hard part is finding the plants we need
at the right time of year. I often feel like I live in a different country
south of the equator!
