I haven't seen Penelope, but New Dawn is a real winner of a climber.
Smells so good, blooms off and on all summer and has stems long enough for
cuts. Not true for all climbers. It is such a neutral color too, it goes
with everything! I grow Clematis 'Horn of Plenty' through it - a big
cornflower blue with a large boss of gold stamens that looks great even
after the petals have fallen off. The stamens remind me of those brass
colored pot scrubbers.

That too, of course. I have two rose bushes that they never seem to touch -
New Dawn and Penelope - which are resistant to black spot too.
