Marilyn, I have many clematis and have experienced the wilt only with Nelly
Moser. This was the first clematis I had in my garden, I believe. I did cut
it back for about 3 yrs when it suffered the wilt and it would promptly
regenerate new growth. This seemed to always occur just after the first full
bloom. After experiencing this I finally decided I didn't want to deal with
that annually and removed it. I do always plant my clematis 2" above the
stem crown. I also take the bottom from black landscaping plastic pot
(azalea type), placing this upside down around the plant screwing down into
the soil and fill the pot with mulch. The pot protects the fragile stems and
the mulch keeps the plant roots cool. Other plants hide the pot. I usually
start with a plant in 6" nursery pot which is the size we sell at the
greenhouse where I work.
Susan, I agree with you that they do need lots of moisture but good
drainage. I have clay soil which I have amended so I don't feel this is a
problem. Our soil is very neutral but I'm wondering what affect acid soil
has.
I have a problem with 'Sweet Autumn' as it reseeds prolifically. This
fall I tried shearing the seed heads in hopes of reducing the problem. I
love the bloom of this one and also the seed heads.
The clematis that receives the most attention in my garden is 'Mrs
Cholmondeley' which is a very large blue, long blooming one. This past
season the blooms took on more of a purple color than it has in the past. I
assume this is a weather condition.
A couple of very favorite clematis I have are 'Durandii' ( a large blue
blooming shrub which blooms continually) and 'Betty Corning' ( a viticella
small blue/purple bell shape bloom).
