In the greenhouse, though, Marilyn? I've done the same thing but without a greenhouse have not had any success.

Those tiny little plants that are always for sale at the early Flowers Shows
at the convention centers can be transplanted to a gallon pot and grown on
for a year. For me, this has increased the survival rate dramatically.

No, we have solid clay in Oregon, but amend as we can. They do like limey
soil and I always plant them with some dolomite lime.
Also -- what AGE plants are you buying. As many as I have I have NEVER
gotten them to grow unless I start with a minimum of a one gallon plant.
Those ones in the boxes and in 4" pots won't make it without a greenhouse,
here in Oregon even.

<<Gale, I grow a lot of different clematis in the Cincinnati area, z6a.
They
say that the secret is to plant them where the roots remain cool, such as at
the base of something else, such as a shrub or rose, and then let the vines
climb up into the sun. I do this when I can, but it isn't always possible. I
haven't found that they need any particular care. A mulch could also help
keep roots cool. Bill Lee>>
Yes, I have planted them mulched, I have planted them under bushes, in the
shade of the house, etc. etc., they still die. Maybe they need real fluffy
soil? which we don't have here, solid clay.
