Moved to a new area recently

I recently moved from Belleville, Illinois, which is near St. Louis Mo.
, To the Southeast in Huntsville Al. I joined this list because when we
moved here we bought a new house and the yard is one half acre. It is a
new lawn and has not even taken to grass yet.
I want to avoid spending my entire summer and fall mowing grass and
would like to section it off and plant it up in some nice perennials.
I brought some seeds along when I moved but they are mostly marigolds,
morning glories, Hybiscus, four 'o clocks and a few annuals. I had a very
small yard at my last residence and mostly used climbing vines and large
bush types to hide the cyclone fence.
Now I want to get busy making plans for a great yard.
I have always enjoyed flowers and want perrenials so I can also get an
established look to add to later.
Any and all help would be appreciated as I have no idea when or what is
good for this area.
I want to use violets to cover areas near the house. Is this a good or
bad idea?
I can't wait to get started and usually like starting from seed as it
is more satisfying when I think I raised something from seed that a
bedding plant.
