Hi Debbie,
Welcome to the south! I garden in Wesson, MS. You asked about amending the clay
soil. Well, the only advise I can give is start collecting organic matter immediately.
We have about 2 acres, with about 2/3 of it growing 100 ft. pine trees. We still
haul in truckloads of pinestraw and leaves. You could spread the leaves or pinestraw
on the beds you plan to make now, or start a compost pile and till them into the
soil in the spring, when it's not so wet. I also buy composted cow manure, mix it
with peat moss and dig a hole at least twice the size of the plant, then fill the
hole with the peat mixture. I used over 50 bags of manure last year.
You should contact your county agent and have your soil tested. Your clay may not
be as bad as my Yazoo clay - I hope not! At any rate, the best advice for starting
grass is use lime, lots of it. I used a ton when I planted my centipede grass seed.
Your Norfold Island pine should do fine outside in the summer. Mine grew at least
a foot last summer. It's 9 ft. tall now. I have angel wing begonias, too. If you'd
like a cutting just email me.
Sheila
