What I've been told (and, as you may guess, the subject comes up often)
is that they eat worms. The digging that they do is to find the worms.
So, the better your yard is, the more likely that they'll show up. The
only way I've heard to get rid of them is with traps baited with worms.
Use a stocking to tie the worms in (so they can't crawl away).
