Sighthounds as opposed to scenthounds like beagles, bassets, dachounds,
PBGVs, hunt with their eyes -- all hounds use every sense they can of
course, scenthounds use their eyes also - Sighthound have been used to
hunt "horned" animals for centuries - Salukis for gazelle, scottish
deerhounds for deer, etc -- in this country except for surepticious (sp)
hunts they are used primarily to hunt - that is catch and kill - jack
rabbits and coyote. It would be a pretty poor sighthound that was afraid to
take a deer. Other sighthounds, like borzoi, irish wolfhounds, rhodesian
ridgeback and afghans were bred to hunt predators - the first two for
wolves, the rho rdg for lion and the afghan for mountain lion.
