Anne, as the token Quebecker responding, thank you for your thoughts.
Remarkable doesn't quite describe things here, hellish is more the word. We
were out of power for 6 days, and it was anywhere from +2 C to -20 C.
Cooking over the fire was fun for one night, then things got scary ...
moving from our place to parents, brothers, sisters, then NO ONE had power.
Nowhere to go, highways and bridges closed, when would it end, no heat,
crouched around fires, no water (purification plants in Montreal on
electrical power) no banking machines, no money, no stores open, no food,
batteries dying and none to be had, no work, no school, elderly parents,
little kids ... to tell you the truth this was one occasion when the garden
was the last thing on my mind. My 71 year old father fell and broke his leg,
needed surgery, but the hospitals lost power, had to run on generators and
were only doing life-saving surgery, so he had to wait 7 days to have the
metal plates screwed in. I'll never look at a disaster on tv with the same
disconnected sympathy again.
Thank God it's over and we can start to get back to normal. Not so some
Quebeckers and Ontarians who have another week of no power, after 2 weeks
endured up to now. Say your prayers for them.
Anyway, we had lots of snow cover before the ice, so besides large trees
which lost PLENTY of branches, I think things in the garden are going to be
okay. Can't clean up now because the branches are cemented to the ground by
about 50mm of ice. I was a little worried about the burlap covered shrubs
because the burlap is covered with +++ pounds of ice, but can't do anything
about it. Bashing the ice off with a pick would rather defeat the purpose I
had in mind of protecting the little Japanese maples that I could finally
affort this year. I live in hope. I'll start my seeds in a month or so and
look forward to the summer.
